Gynecologists from Moldova, internationally certified in colposcopy and cervical cancer prevention with the support of UNFPA

24 December 2025

Vera Melniciuc, gynecologist at AMT Botanica/”Dalila” Women’s Health Center, Tatiana Popova, gynecologist at AMT Ciocana, Stela Tihon, gynecologist at AMT Râșcani and Diana Valuța, Head of the Cervical Screening Implementation Coordination Unit at the Mother and Child Institute, were recently certified internationally in the field of Colposcopy and Cervical Cancer prevention.

During 2017-2018, 16 gynecologists from the Republic of Moldova participated in an International Training Program on Colposcopy and Cervical Cancer Prevention through theoretical training modules and online testing. Four of them subsequently strengthened their practical skills in colposcopy, managing 100 cases under the coordination of national trainers.

As a result of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) held in Lyon in May 2019 – four gynecologists from the Republic of Moldova were internationally certified in the field of Colposcopy and Cervical Cancer prevention.

“This is an important result for cervical cancer prevention services in the Republic of Moldova. Any woman who addresses a colposcopy specialist must benefit from quality services, based on a minimum set of knowledge and skills aligned with international standards,” said Diana Valuta, Head of the Coordination Unit for the Implementation of Cervical Screening in the Republic of Moldova.

“We hope that this good experience will be taken over by other specialists in Moldova, so that the quality of colposcopy services is improved at the national level,” said Uliana Tabuica, Head of the National Reference Center for Colposcopy, previously internationally certified in the United Kingdom (BSCCP).

The International Training Program on Colposcopy and Cervical Cancer Prevention is being carried out within the framework of the collaborative partnership between the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the International Federation for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPF) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) with the aim of enhancing the quality of colposcopy and cervical cancer prevention services at the regional level.

In the Republic of Moldova, these activities are carried out as part of the Cervical Cancer Prevention project for 2017-2020, implemented by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the International Association for Cervical Cancer Prevention (ICCPA) and other partners.
