The Republic of Moldova was invited, for the first time as an associated country, to participate in the first expert workshop for the preparation of the Third European Union Report on Cancer Screening, held in Lyon, France, on 4 to 5 February 2026.
The event was organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO) within the framework of the EU-GAINS project, funded by the EU4Health programme, and brought together experts from 33 European countries.
The meeting agenda included plenary sessions and thematic workshops focused on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, discussions on performance indicators, harmonized data collection, findings from the survey of screening programmes, and the integration of information into the European Cancer Information System (ECIS).
The Republic of Moldova was represented by Diana Văluță, Head of the Cervical Cancer Screening Implementation Coordination Unit within the Department of the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices, Mother and Child Institute (IMSP), acting as an expert and national data provider. This participation marks the country’s first inclusion in the process of developing the EU report on cancer screening. The National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme is involved in the provision, validation, and review of data in accordance with the methodology applied at the European level.
The Third European Union Report on Cancer Screening is coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in collaboration with the European Commission, and aims to assess the implementation of screening programmes and present consolidated data at the European level.
