What happens during a Pap test

The Pap test is a simple and safe procedure that only takes a few minutes. Your family doctor or trained nurse takes a small sample of cells from your cervix for analysis in a laboratory.

The test is performed in the family doctor’s office or in the screening office of the medical institution. The procedure is simple, painless and does not require special preparations on the day of collection.

During harvesting:

  • you will be asked to sit on the examination table, as in a gynecological consultation;

  • The doctor uses a small instrument, called a speculum, to view the cervix.

  • with a special brush, a sample of cells is taken from the surface of the cervix;

  • The sample is applied to a glass slide or placed in a transport container and sent to the cytology laboratory.

After the harvest, you can immediately resume your usual activities. The procedure does not require rest, does not affect the health of the reproductive system, and does not influence fertility.

The test result is sent to the family doctor, who explains it and, if necessary, indicates further investigations.
