If you are between 25 and 61 years old, your family doctor or nurse at the institution where you are registered can invite you for a Pap test. This is the usual way in which eligible women are included in the cervical screening program.
If you have not been contacted, you can contact your family doctor to schedule an appointment. The test is free for all women in this age group, regardless of whether they have health insurance or not.
Participation in cervical screening is organized, and the family doctor has the role of identifying, informing and inviting eligible women for the test. Together with the nurse, he/she:
-
identifies women between the ages of 25 and 61;
-
invites them according to the medical institution’s scheduling lists, so that testing is done once every three years;
-
can contact women during medical visits, by phone, text message, or other available methods.
Before the test is performed, the woman receives information about its benefits and limitations and expresses her consent to participate. The consent is signed on the cervical screening form. If signing is not possible, the consent can be expressed verbally, in the presence of the doctor or nurse.
If you have not been contacted or would like to schedule an appointment earlier, you can directly request your family doctor to include you in the cervical screening program.
The test is performed free of charge in public health institutions that offer cervical screening services, including for women without health insurance. The results are used exclusively for medical purposes, for communicating the result, scheduling the next steps and medical records, while respecting the confidentiality of personal data.
